Rio de Janeiro is the second major city of Brazil, behind only Sao Paulo. The city is capital of the state of Rio de Janerio. The city was once the capital of Brazil and of the Portuguese Empire. Rio had lost much of its mercantilist colonial flavour but started to develop as a modern city by the late nineteenth century. For more than sixty years these have been Rio’s heart and soul, providing a constant source of recreation and income for cariocas. In stark contrast, Rio’s favelas, clinging precariously to the hillsides, show another side to the city, saying much about the divisions within it. Although not exclusive to the capital, these slums seem all the more harsh in Rio because of the plenty and beauty that surround them. 
It is famous for its spectacular natural setting, its carnivals, samba and other music, hotel-lined tourist beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema, paved with decorated black and cream swirl pattern mosaics. Some of the most famous local landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Jesus known as 'Cristo Redentor' a top Corcovada mountain, which has recently been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
