For over 800 years, Oxford has been a home to royalty, scholars and one of the oldest, most celebrated university towns place in history and for has rivaled Cambridge for academic pre-eminence in England. The name of the town comes either from its literal meaning, a ford for oxen, or from "Osca's ford". Its population about 116,600 . Since the 9th century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for thousands of years. 
It is charming with peaceful courtyards squares and delightful gardens, the hectic bustle of its pedestrian zone, its excellent cultural facilities - all these help to create the town's special atmosphere. The university buildings include some of England's finest architecture, and the city can also boast some excellent museums and numerous bars and restaurants. The museum greets you with a wonderful sculpture gallery adorned with classical statues and is particularly strong in it's collections of middle eastern and far eastern antiquities. The main street in Oxford is Broad Street. Broad Street has a very rich history dating back to 911 AD. Landmarks on this street are of course the Clarendon Building which is part of the Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre. The street is lined with many shops and at the other end of the street the shopping street starts. It can be easily reached from the capital city, London. Oxford should be high on anyone's itinerary, and can keep you occupied for several days.
